Introduction

The Traffic Wardens Organisation in Chennai City was inaugurated in the year 1977 Vide G.O. Ms. No. 2268 / Home Department / Dated 10.08.1977. This is a voluntary organisation and assists the Greater Chennai Traffic Police in imparting Road Safety Education, Patrolling duties, regulating traffic on regular basis and other occasions such as festivals, elections, VIP visit, night checks etc.

The Traffic Wardens are appointed on a non - remuneration basis and are given badges of rank. The Traffic Wardens Organisation was extended to Coimbatore, Madurai, Tirchy, Salem, North Arcot and Nilgiris Districts.

The Traffic Wardens Organisation was inaugurated by his Excellency the Governor of Tamilnadu, Thiru. Prabhu doss Patwari in the presence of the then Honorable Chief Minister, Thiru. MG Ramachandran in the year 1978 at Rajaji Hall, Chennai.

The Organisation was started as a wing of the Traffic Police and was Known as the Madras City Police Traffic Wardens’ Organisation. Later as it was extended to other districts it was renamed by a G.O , M.S.No. 1068 Dt.18.07.1995 as Tamil Nadu Traffic Wardens’ Organisation. The Road Safety Patrol is a wing of the Tamil Nadu Traffic Wardens’ Organisation

As the road users and road traffic was slowly growing day by day, it was decided to catch the young minds in the school level and educate them about road safety and road rules. In the year 1981 ROAD SAFETY PATROL was inaugurated in various schools and was brought under the TAMILNADU TRAFFIC WARDENS ORGANISATION.

The past few decades have seen professionals, Businessmen and officials from various organisation serving the public through this unique organisation devoting their precious time and energy.
