Duties & Responsibilities Of Traffic Wardens

Traffic Wardens play an important role as a liaison officer between the Traffic Police and the General Public.

Regulation of Traffic at important points is the main function of the Traffic Wardens. The duty schedule is drawn by the Chief Traffic Warden / Deputy Chief Traffic Warden in consultation with traffic department on a monthly basis. Such duty schedules shall be issued to the Traffic Wardens well in advance to enable them to perform Road Duties effectively. Two hour road duty in a week between 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm and a monthly parade on 2nd Saturday of every month between 06.15 am to 07.15 a.m. is mandatory for every Traffic Warden. The above duty hours are an indicative example, keeping in view of the fact that the services of the Traffic Wardens are honorary and voluntary. When requisitioned by the Traffic department special duties may be drawn by the Chief Traffic Warden / Deputy Chief Traffic Warden

Traffic Warden shall report to the duty point 15 minutes before the schedule time of duty

Traffic Wardens on reaching the duty point shall report to the Dy.Chief Traffic Warden, Senior Duty Planning Officer / Duty Planning Officer / Officer In charge respectively.

Traffic Wardens shall do duty only in Uniform

Senior Duty Planning Officer / Duty Planning Officer shall submit monthly attendance report with regard to various duties done by wardens in the prescribed format. Report shall reach the office before 10th of the following month.

Traffic Wardens shall pay the Annual Subscription at the beginning of each financial year on or before 31stMay of that year

Traffic Wardens while performing road duties, shall emphasis the importance of Road Safety to Road Users.

Traffic Wardensshall be polite and courteous towards the general members of the public and be firm while doing traffic regulations.

Traffic Wardens play an important role in the Road Safety Education through Road Safety Patrol Units in School. They are the liaison between the schools and the Police. A warden maintains good relation with the school or schools he/she is assigned to and assists the heads of the institutions in the administration and running of their R.S.P. Units. The Traffic Warden shall be purely Honorary Officers dedicated to safety of the young children.

Traffic Wardens shall always be punctual in their attendance and be properly and neatly dressed according to regulations.

Traffic Wardens shall be subject to the code of conduct laid down regarding their behavior and discipline as members of a disciplined organisation.

Traffic Wardens shall visit the schools which are assigned to them and coordinate the Road Safety Patrol activities, with the Heads of institutions. They shall strive to sort out the difficulties if any in the traffic system in and around the schools in consultation with the Chief Traffic Warden / Deputy Chief Traffic Wardens and the Traffic authorities.

Traffic Wardens shall supervise various activities like Training of ROAD SAFETY PATROL Cadets, Appointing ROAD SAFETY PATROL Captains, Assisting ROAD SAFETY PATROL Teachers in conducting classes, and Coordination of Cadets for Independence Day & Republic Day celebrations, Inter-school Competition participation, Road Safety Week Campaigns etc. of the School Units under them.

Traffic Wardens will arrange lectures and film shows on road safety in the schools. Officers of the Traffic Warden Faculty department / Senior Traffic Wardens and Deputy Chief Traffic Warden will generally give these lectures.

Traffic Wardens shall work under the Senior Duty Planning Officer / Duty planning officers of ROAD SAFETY PATROL and get instructions regarding formation of R.S.P. units in schools.

Traffic Wardens shall supervise and impart training to the new R.S.P. Units.

Traffic Wardens shall guide the Head of the institutions on the uniform regulations prescribed for the R.S.P. cadets.

Traffic Wardens shall always ensure the safety of the R.S.P. cadets under their care whenever they are taken out for duties in assisting the Police on awareness programs etc.

No Warden shall address any letters to the heads of institutions in any matter pertaining to the R.S.P. activities unless authorised to do so

Traffic Wardens shall not collect any funds from schools or cadets in any matter by way of membership of the R.S.P. or for any other purpose.

The Traffic Wardens shall submit monthly report of their respective schools activities to the Duty Planning Officers who shall check and submit the same to the Senior Duty Planning Officer . The Sr. Duty Planning Officer shall submit Quarterly reports to the concerned Dy.Chief Traffic Warden. These reports will include new units formed in schools, appointment of Patrol Captains and all other matters of interest pertaining to the Road Safety Patrol.

The Warden Officers shall convey to the Road Safety Patrol units all instructions pertaining to ROAD SAFETY PATROL activities from time to time.

Any act done by the Warden of an outstanding nature should be reported to the Chief Traffic Warden / Deputy Chief Traffic Warden for due recognition.
